Nanao
The fifth floor
NANAO HURRIES OUT OF ROOM 525. He pulls Kamino with him by the hand; they close the door quickly as soon as theyâre both in the hall.
He managed to execute every part of his plan, from A to Z. He boiled the water in the kettle, set the alarm, gave Kamino some firecrackers, and hid. The alarm went off exactly when he wanted it to, then he picked up the chair and managed to hit both of them with it. The only thing he didnât manage to do was finish them off.
There were two of them: a well-built guy who looked like a martial artist, and a woman about the same height as Nanao himself.
Itâs a good thing he knew theyâd be armed with blowguns. If he hadnât, heâd very likely have been hit with a dart right off the bat, and that would have been that. As it was, he stuffed his clothes with pillows in case he got hit with a stray dart.
He used the chair on the man and then hit the woman in the head with it, but the chair slipped from his grasp after that, and he was left with nothing else to use as a weapon. Maybe he should have taken the time to grab each of their heads and twist, snapping their necks. But the man hadnât lost consciousness entirely, and was already trying to get back on his feet to come at Nanao again. He decided the best course of action was to get as far away as possible at that point.
Itâs true that the guy was dazed enough that Nanao figured he could still take him, but there was also Kamino to consider â her presence made everything that much more dangerous. There was also the possibility that the woman might wake up, too, while he was busy dealing with the man.
So it was time to flee the scene.
In cases like this, Nanao trusts his gut.
They hurry down the hall. He looks over at Kamino walking beside him and notices sheâs holding a cushion.
âAh!â Kamino looks as surprised as Nanao to find it still in her hands. Embarrassed, she holds it up to show him, and then they see a dart-like object stuck in its center. âThis is from when we went out the door. I thought I heard something and looked back, and held this in front of me.â
The big man must have shot it at them as they left. The cushion was a lifesaver.
As they approach the elevators, Nanao debates inwardly if they should use them. The man might catch up with them as theyâre waiting for one to arrive.
âThe emergency stairs are this way. I was just there.â Kamino rushes ahead. They have to hurry â they donât know when a dart might come flying at them from behind.
Partway down the hall, Nanao notices something on the floor. An earpiece. He picks it up, guessing it belonged to the man he tangled with near the elevators.
Out in front of him, Yuka Kamino reaches the door to the emergency stairwell and opens it.
